Misplaced effort: 75% of tooth health from brushing 2x/day for 2 full minutes by the clock with soft toothbrush and pea-sized portion of fluoridated toothpaste, 24% from flossing or using water pik daily to clean between teeth where toothbrush can't reach, and 1% frm a fluoridated mouthwash. This must be combined with a healthful diet and regular professional care. Save the salt to season your food.

Why salt water?: My experience is that salt water rinses are about as good as a "tincture of time" in other words, they are basically something for the patient to do while the mouth heals on its own. Sure there is a very minor antimicrobial action. And, the act of rinsing with water dilutes plaque, sugars and can dislodge food particles. In my office good oral hygiene = floss 93%, toothbrush 6%, rinsing 1%!
