High risk: Lipoprotein(a) (also called lp(a)) is a lipoprotein subclass. Genetic studies and numerous epidemiologic studies have identified lp(a) as a risk factor for atherosclerotic diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke. The results of the LP (a) test will vary, depending on the laboratory where the sample was analyzed. Normal values for this test are below 30 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter).
