Diseased Bone marrow: Mds is a condition, mostly seen in the older age groups(with rare exceptions). It manifests as impaired blood formation typically of more than one lineage(red cell, platelets and white cells). Sometimes it is only anemia which is progressive over a period of months. Diagnosis requires an examiantion of the bone marrow and cytogenetics( on the bone marrow cells). It is best to consult a hematologis.

Bone marrow: The only way to diagnose a myelodysplastic syndrome completely an accurately including prognostic factors is by performing a bone marrow biopsy and aspiration with subsequent multi-pronged assessment: morphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular studies. Some changes in the peripheral blood may suggest mds but a complete diagnosis still relies on bone marrow examination.
