Normal turnover of: The epithelium of tongue. The epithelial lining of the tongue undergoes turnover and some of the old cells stick to the underlying one and produce a thin film. It is normal. If there is excessive whitish deposit you can clean it with gentle scraping with your toothbrush.

May not be a problem: Western medicine does not pay much attention to tongues unless they have dramatic imbalances. Chinese medicine pays great attention to the tongue, using it to diagnose the state of the GI tract. According to http://www.Sacredlotus.Com/diagnosis/tongue/ a thin white coating is normal, though it can be a sign of "external cold"if you have those symptoms. Bottom line- probably nothing to worry about.
