Receding gums: There are many causes- poor oral hygiene, brushing too hard or improperly, occlusal trauma, etc. The amount of recession as well as the progression are important considerations. Minimal recession over time is not as serious as severe recession in young individuals. Determine the cause and arrest the process. There are surgical procedures that can often restore lost tissue.

Periodontal disease: At your age, you should not be seeing receding gums. Visit your dentist for a thorough evaluation. Recession can be caused by brushing with a toothbrush with bristles that are too firm for the texture of your gums, so try one that is soft-bristled. Also, you may be too aggressive when you brush. Move your brush in small circular motions, and be sure to brush for 2-3 minutes--not hurriedly.

Depends: Dr spector is absolutely correct. Gum recession can be caused by overly aggressive traumatic oral hygiene. Recession can be caused by poor oral hygiene with resultant gum disease. It can also be caused by teeth expanded beyond their bone support or by traumatic occlusion. Ask your dentist if consultation w periodontist, orthodontist, or both, is in order.

A graft: The treatment for recession is a gum graft. Gum tissue is taken from one part of the mouth and "transplanted" to where it is needed. Most gum recession does not need treatment however. It is usually done for looks not function
