Dental Consult: You may be experiencing gingivitis, or the start of periodontitis. This is determined via an exam with radiographs. Call your dentist for an appointment.

Plaque is usually it: Please excuse the sarcastic, condescending response of the original responder. The professionals on the site should try to be helpful, not belittling. Usually, when the gums are sensitive, it is due to an accumulation of plaque and tartar. This is comprised of bacteria that are always in the mouth and grow on the teeth. If you see a dentist, probably a good cleaning will make a world of difference.
