Many diagnoses: Your mother could be suffering from a multitude of ailments including arthritis, an infection in her joint or a muscle injury; however given the acuity of her symptoms it would be a good idea to make sure she does not have a fracture (stress fracture or complete). It would be advisable to have her visit her local physician or ortho surgeon for a thorough evaluation.
