Try probiotics: Antibiotics can lead to worse overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria which cause bv. Eat low fat yogurt and you can apply yogurt topically in vagina or use a lactobacillus probiotic orally and topically. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit and avoid high fat foods that promote bv.

Gardnerella vaginalis once was thought to be the cause of BV, but actually it's just one of the many normal vaginal bacteria that overgrow with BV; it's not the cause. It's hard to understand why your doc won't try oral clindamycin: it's a logical choice in this situation, and recommended by experts. Ask for referral to a gyn who subspecializes in infectious diseases.
