Steroids?: By hypoplastic anemia, i assume that you mean diamond-blackfan anemia. If not, then disregard my answer. Many patients with dba improve their red blood cell production with steroid treatment, and many of those that respond to steroids can be maintained on very low doses of steroids. For those patients that do not respond, chronic transfusion therapy is necessary to allow adequate hemoglobin values.
