Irritation to a bone: Big toes take on quite a bit of pressure in gait. They give us most of our propulsion at toe off. If the toe was not injured, than just the very act of walking could be the mechanism of pain. If you have never fractured this toe before, i feel it is high unlikely it is arthritis at your age. Consider shoe sales. It could be due to the irritation of a tiny extra bone called an ossicle.
