Iron: Serum iron will fluctuate- depending on the food, iron tab etc. The best way to see is to see your ferritin. In majority cases- in young woman like yourself- iron deficiency is related to your period. My suggestion is to eat well balanced wood, iron rich food like spinach etc, take prenatal multivitamin and follow up with your doctor and gynecologist as directed.

Why was it checked?: You need to give us the background information also. Are you anemic? We need to know your hemoglobin(hb) and results of blood count called cbc(complete blood count). Serum iron alone is difficult to interpret... We also need to know your iron binding capacity. So it may be best to repeat and get both of theses values and your hb value sent to us before we can be of much help to you.
