A member asked:

How can you treat facial pain from an ear infection on that side?

Treat infection!: If the infection is in the outer ear (so-called "swimmer's ear"), cortisporin (neomycin polymyxin and hydrocortisone) solution, or something similar, should be used. If it's in the middle ear (otitis media), you'll probably need an antibiotic. The point is, don't treat the pain, treat the infection that's causing the pain.

Have the ear treated: If you have an ear infection and it is referring pain to the face, seeing a doctor to treat the ear infection should get ride of the facial pain.

Diagnosis first: First, make sure the diagnosis is right. Many times, MDs see patient for ear pain. MD sees nothing. Tells patient "ear infection". Treats with antibiotics. No improvement. If this is you, consider the most common disorder - that is not ear related - causing ear pain. TMJ. See TMJ expert for evaluation/treatment.
