A member asked:

Can a barium swallow detect esophageal cancer?

Depends: Barium swallow can disclose lesions in the esophagus and the imaging study can diagnose a mass or ulcer in the esophagus that would be suggestive of cancer. A definitive diagnosis usually requires biopsy and examination of the tissue by a pathologist.

Yes,: but endoscopy is better, and any abnormality that looks like cancer detected on barium swallow will need an endoscopy/biopsy anyway.
