Musculoskeletal...: Pain as you describe is likely musculoskeletal pain related to coughing. The chest wall has muscles, cartilage and bone and these structures can be injured when coughing. For example, muscle strain/sprain, cartilage inflammation, rib bruise or even fracture can occur with coughing. When the cough resolves, this will heal so see your doctor for cough treatment.
