A member asked:

Could it be right that you have to experience having a 'high' before becoming bipolar?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not necessarily: In some cases people can present first with depression. It can be difficult at that time to distinguish between bipolar depression and major depression as there is overlap in symptoms. Sometimes the response to medication is an indicator. One can also have "mixed" states. See image.
