Not all tears hurt: Most meniscal tears are symptomatic/bothersome, but many are not. This determination is largely dependent upon the location and type of tear. Small frayed tears are likely less symptomatic than larger vertical tears or horizontal tears of the meniscus. If the tear is repeatedly snagged or caught by the normal motions of the knee, symptomatic tears will likely require treatment, usually arthroscopy.

Sometimes.: You could have a meniscus and still walk normally. It depends on the type of tear and the location.
