Pericardial effusion: There are many causes of "fluid around the heart" or pericardial effusion. If you have underlying heart disease, particularly with heart failure, this can be a sign of decompensation and may require more therapy. Also, there are infectious and inflammatory causes of pericardial effusion. Proper therapy depends on identifying the cause of the effusion.
