A member asked:

What happens if woman is breastfeeding, and she is unware that she is hiv positive? is her baby doomed?

No: Although breastfeeding can lead to acquisition of HIV from a mother with the disease it may not, and if she is aware that she is hiv+ after testing she can stop breast feeding. If the baby has become hiv+ there are pediatricians and pediatric infectious disease experts who can treat the baby quite effectively.

No: While HIV can be transmitted through breastmilk, it is not a 100% thing. In third world contries where there are less medications, less sanitiation, more disease, and 'bad water', breastfeeding from an HIV mom might actually be better for infants than shoddy formula. In western countries, an +hiv mother should avoid breastfeeding. Many moms are tested for HIV while pregnant.
