2 months: Not before 2 months is the guideline from the american academy of pediatrics, but i generally don't recommend it before 6 months. Instead use light-colored long-sleeved shirts with pants and avoid evening and early morning hours when insects are usually out. Make sure any deet containing products contain less than 10% and that Permethrin products are only sprayed on clothing.

2 months and older.: 10% to 30% deet can be used. Do follow the manufacturer's instructions for use strictly. Do not use on open cuts, spray forms increase the risk of inhalation, do not apply on hands to prevent contact with eyes, mouth and private areas. Clothing with the insect shield trade mark which are impregnated with Permethrin carry a very low risk of toxicity, are effective in preventing bites.

6 months: First you need to be careful, and try to avoid exposure to insect bites using clothing, mosquito netting and staying inside during peak "biting hours". If bites are inevitable, use a "family" or "kid" friendly insect repellent which contains less than 10% deet. See this site for more information: http://www.Idph.State.Il.Us/envhealth/deetfacts.Htm.
