So antipsychotics cause deep muscle stiffness or surface muscle stiffness?

Hopefully none!: If you have muscles stiffness on antipsychotics you need to tell your psychiatrist right away. This is a side effect that is unacceptable and needs to be addressed, to prevent worsening. It does not matter which muscle is stiff. Of course, people on antipsychotics can get still and sore muscles from overexertion, just like anyone else and this is not related to the antipsychotic. But call MD!

Possible s/e: In fact, muscle stiffness, abnormal muscle movements are reason for very close medical monitoring while taking antipsychotic medication. Often meds are prescribed to prevent this side effect. Another strategy is to keep the dose as low as possible. If any unusual muscle stiffness, twitching or abnormal (dsykinetic) movements are noticed, be sure to tell prescribing doctor right away. Take care.
