ADHD: Adhd is a mental illness because it is caused by a malfunctioning of the circuits of the brain. Despite the stigma associated with mental illness, 20% of us have one, and with treatment most function quite well in their lives. There should be no more shame in having a mental illness than having asthma.

The DSM-V lists ADHD: As a neurodevelopmental disorder. Adult adhd studies show that the chemical Dopamine does not stay in the spaces between neurons (synapses) long enough in the part of the brain that sustains attention ; inhibits behavior. Norepinephrine is another chemical involved in adhd. Psychiatric genetic studies have found combinations of gene mutations at multiple sites that " set up" a person to have adhd.
