A member asked:

Hi, what is your opinion on the use of birth control for someone who has ocular aura migranes. do you see any real risk? what is my best option?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not recommended: Migraines with aura are generally thought to be a contraindication to combined oral contraceptives. Meaning, it is a risk for you to take birth control containing estrogen with progesterone, like the pill. There is an increased risk of stroke. I would consider non-hormonal methods or, possibly, Progesterone only methods. If you are a candidate for an iud, that may be a good option.
