Depends: It depends on the type of surgical procedure done. Some procedures do not require casting.

Usually not: The after surgery care depends on the procedure performed. For most bunion surgeries, we place the patient in a surgical shoe with limited standing/ walking around the home the first 10 days. Sutures are then removed and the patient placed in a removal cast. They can increase weightbearing to tolerance, get the foot wet and begin rom exercises. Check with with your surgeon, care varies. Dr l.

Usually no: A good alternative is a cam boot but you may be asked to use crutches.

Not always.: Depending on the exact procedure, following bunion surgery your doctor may want you to walk with a surgical shoe, a rigid waking boot, or use crutches to keep pressure off of the surgical site. On occasion your foot may be placed in a cast. Discuss the post operative course with you surgeon prior to your surgery so that you can be prepared and know what to expect.
