A member asked:

Diag. w/ acute bronchitis bacterial. coughing went away 1wk it came back, with slight heavy feeling in chest. xray was clean. ekg was ok. what is it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bronchitis: Acute bronchitis is >95% viral. Bacterial infection is usually with bordetella pertussis, the cause of whooping cough. Although usually in children it has been shown to produce adult disease and the cough can go on for weeks and weeks. The inflammatory process damages the trachea and bronchi and it takes a long time for these to regenerate and become normal again. Smoking will enhance damage.
