Anethesia: This is a common fear. We now have monitors and much safer drugs for general anesthesia. Relate your fears to your anesthesiologist. They usually do a nice job of helping set your mind at ease. They may also be able to offer you a pre op sedative to relieve some of your anxiety.

It is usually safe: There are few terrible true stories about not waking up from anesthesia. These are the exception, not the rule; these events are very rare. "not waking up" can be the result from possible (very rare) complications from both anesthesia and surgery. It all depends on your medical condition, the reasons for surgery and the surgery itself.
