A member asked:

Why is it that the physician proscribe antibiotics for viral infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Logic: Most viral infections have no effective antiviral and most antibiotics are anti bacterial but not antiviral. There are a few viruses with specific counteractive medication such as herpes. But the prescription of antibiotics for illness most likely caused by virus is wasteful and can lead to the production of resistant bacteria. Patients however, insist on antibiotics when they are ill.
