Not a good idea: Whether or not you need antibiotics should be determined by the doctor after a full history and physical exam. These are not benign medications and besides the long term effect on bacterial resistance there can be many short term complications. Be patient, see the doctor.

Not likely!: Not in your best interest...Must have complete medical history and diagnosis of what the infection involves. It's worth your time to see your dentist or physician to get this diagnosed and get the best antibiotic with proper dosing.

It's the Dr.'s call: That decision is entirely up to the doctor. Some doctors will & some won't. It may also depend upon whether or not you are a patient of record & when you were last seen. It's always best that the doctor actually see you first, go over your medical history, & make sure the diagnosis is right. The best and proper treatment is then rendered to the patient. The time & money is well worth the visit!
