No easy answer: Everyone's body type is quite different. Some mesomorphs can rapidly gain muscle mass with limited exercise and reasonable nutrition. Other ectomorphs(hard gainers) can't seem to gain muscle mass regardless of how much they work out and eat. Also remember it's easier to gain muscle mass when you just start working out compared to after working out for years.
