Works for a few: But not many. The quit rate for stopping cold turkey is about 3%, but if you get involved in a formal smoking cessation program (call 1-800-quitnow) you can raise it to 5%. However, with nicotine replacement therapy (patches, lozenges etc.) and a program it is about 15%, same with zyban (bupropion, a prescription drug). Best results are Chantix (varenicline)+program at about 40%. Try hypnosis.

It works.: As far as quitting without any nicotine replacement, the cold turkey method is great. But plan it ahead of time. Pick a quit date in advance, maybe a meaningful date like a birthday or holiday, and gather people who are aware of your attempt that you can call upon for moral support if you start to falter. Good luck!!

Congrats: On deciding to quit. Quitting isn't easy regardless of the method. You are going to need some plan for dealing with your cravings, whether that's chewing gum or working on a crossword or calling a friend, try to avoid letting food be your diversion - as many people gain weight when they quit smoking.
