A member asked:

How are cancer life prognosises usually determined by doctors?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It's all the odds: For each grade and stage of each common cancer, statistical compilations give the percentage odds of being alive at 1, 2, 3, 5, etc. Years, and these are modified depending on treatments offered, response to the treatment, and so forth. Anyone saying, "the doctor said i would live six months" is being human in reporting what may have been heard but not what was actually said.
