A member asked:

Hard lump found near thyriod area . ent doctor did a fine needle aspiration (fna) and she said everything's fine. how accurate would fna be? thanks.

Unclear: Fna involves taking a small sample of tissue from a thyroid nodule. The results tell us what the probability is that the nodule is benign. When the report says it is benign, there is still a small possibility (3-5%) that the sample missed a cancer. That is why we continue to follow these nodules, and if they enlarge we look to repeat the fna.
