No, not normal: First, staph is an unusual bacteria to cause throat infections. However, if that was indeed cultured out, the sensitivity should tell you what antibiotic would work. The other thought is that it isn't staph at all causing the symptoms, but something like mononucleosis, or a nasty complication of the infection, such as an abcess. Child needs further evaluation and possibly labs if still sick!

Confusing question: Staph is not considered a common pathogen of a throat infection and would not necessarily respond to the Rocephin or Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) listed in your profile. Strep a is the primary throat germ we treat. Was the diagnosis made with a culture ? This may be a case of mono in addition to or instead of what is being treated. Followup visit is advised.
