See a Hygienist: A dental hygienist can remove stains from smoking and other causes. Dark stains just below the gum line often are dark stained deposits of tartar. Usually the gums will also be a dark inflamed red color just above the tartar. See your dentist for a full exam and he can recommend the proper hygiene visit. After that, proper home hygiene will prevent much of that from appearing again.

Gumline stains: The stains may be just stain or tarter. If so, a dental cleaning will remove the stain. However, they may also be decay. See your dentist for an examination and evaluation.
