Sometimes a person's: Sx's just don't fit into a classic mental health category. I have been following a patient for > 1 year who is diagnosed w "psychotic disorder not otherwise specified". Have evaluated him very carefully as have other specialists ; we haven't been able to go past this diagnosis. It would be preferable to use this then to label a pt w a diagnosis that they might not completely fit criteria for.

Variable: Occasionally some people can have an episode of psychosis that doesn't recur, others need to stay on medications long term. Usually it's recommended to stay on meds for a year or more, after which sometimes it is reasonable to slowly decrease the dose under supervision by a psychiatrist, while observing for re-emergence of symptoms.
