A member asked:

After taking 5mg of olanzapine to treat mild psychosis i sleep 12 hours instead of 8, since that time(4 years) i still take 5mg and still sleep 12 hours. is the effect of medication that long? or is it a separate problem with sleep?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Olanzapine is actually used to treat insomnia. Sleeping 12 hours is excessive and, in my opinion, unhealthy. Can depression be contributing to your excessive sleeping? Discuss this problem with your prescribing physician, hopefully a psychiatrist, to see if reducing the dose or switching to another medication is advisable.
