Muscle spasm causes: Muscle spasms can occur from a local process, or something more diffuse, what we call systemic. Common causes are poor hydration, electrolyte problems (low potassium), endocrinological issues, vitamin deficiencies, and medication side effect. Arthritic pain is not typically considered to be a direct cause of muscle spasm.
