Pancreatitis: The pancreas is located in the central upper abdomen with some of it extending into the left upper quadrant. Amylase is one of the pancreatic enzymes that can be elevated in cases of pancreatitis. Ultrasound may be able to look at the pancreas determining the reason for the enzyme elevation and the pain.

Pancreatitis: Abdominal pain with elevated amylase is typical of pancreatitis. Lipase should be elevated too.
