HIV and AIDS: Hiv is a virus which causes aids. You cannot get "aids" without having hiv. You do have HIV for many years before developing aids, but HIV should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible before you develop aids. Earlier diagnosis and treatment helps decrease transmission to others and also helps you obtain an "undetectable viral load" (a very low amount of the HIV virus in your blood).
