A member asked:

I have an extremely sore throat/fever. determined it is not mono or strep but it is bacterial. it is not responding to antibiotics. what could it be?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Confusing question: You say it is bacterial but indicate strep is negative. For routine throat infections, that is the limit of our list.If exposure to gonorrhea is a possibility, that would be a less common but painful possibility as a bacterial infection. Most non-strep sore throats are due to one of a hand full of upper respiratory viruses, non of which improve with antibiotics.
