AIDS caused by HIV.: Aids is a chronic and life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (hiv). By damaging the immune system, HIV interferes with the body's ability to fight infections and can predispose to malignancy. Hiv is sexually transmitted. It can also be spread by infected blood, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breast-feeding. Hiv is the cause of aids.
