Astigmatism: Astigmatism can change as a patient ages similar to myopia or nearsightedness. Typically, astigmatism does not increase as fast as myopia but every patient is different. If you are developing a refractive error with includes myopia and astigmatism, an eye examination is invaluable in measuring and tracking your numbers over a long period of time. Thus routine exams (likely yearly) are helpful.

Shouldn't: Astigmatism can change over time. Past age 26, it is rare for myopia to progress until cataract formation. If astigmatism is increasing, you need to see a specialist eye MD to rule out keratoconus, a serious condition of the cornea which is much easier to treat in early stages. Keep your own record of your glasses prescription from your annual exams.
