A member asked:

Please explain why does chewing tobacco give me the hiccups?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Nobody knows: The cause of hiccoughs in general, but it usually involves something that stimulates the phrenic nerves, which innervate the diaphragm. Smoking and chewing tobacco are both common causes of hiccoughs. Chewed tobacco produces the same addiction as smoking, and a higher rate of mouth and throat cancer. Your body is giving you a message- please listen to it. Stop using tobacco.
