Abscess: Symptoms and appearance should improve starting 48 hrs after you start the antibiotic. This is not a cure;it just buys you time to get the problem treated. If you leave it untreated it will return with a vengeance and may not respond to antibiotic therapy so see your dentist asap.

1 week: An antibiotic therapy for dental abscess is indicated only when drainage cannot be achieved or the patient shows signs of systemic involvement. Penicillin is the most useful antibiotic for dental infection and prescribed for 7-10 days.. Remember, the only way to cure a dental abscess is with dental treatment.
