Agree w Dr. Kanter: Consider the current Ebola epidemic. Most past outbreaks start in rural areas on edge of jungles where there are huntsmen. They are usually contained within a limited area. However, between motor vehicle and air transport, infectious diseases can be carried across countries or continents or to new continents with relative ease. This means that epidemics can become pandemics.
