Trauma or infection: The description sounds like an inflammatory response has occurred. This results from injury, infection or joint inflammation like arthritis. Suggest seeing er doc or pcp as early as possible.

Inflamation: This is a reaction to an injury within the knee. Swelling and warmth are the initial response to start healing. You want to make sure you don't have an infection (fever).
