Is ramelteon recommended for elderly people with vascular dementia?

Not my first choice: Feel more comfortable with lunesta, (eszopiclone) which seems safe in the elderly population. But would prefer to not have older folks rely on sleep meds. Maybe melatonin is the safest otc choice here.

Yes: It is an excellent choice for elderly people with or without vascular dementia who have sleep onset insomnia. It does not have the high fall risks associated with the other sedative hypnotics. It also can strengthen the circaidian rhythm that is weakened in dementia patients.
