Not OK.: The meshes used years ago are a far cry from what we have available today. If he is having issues he needs to see a doctor.

Yes ,: Mesh is being use over 4 decades , yes some times they erode , present the way you described , some meshes with ring even may erode the bowel causing fistulas ( those no longer used ) take your father to a surgeon for evaluation , some times mesh even need to be removed and use variety alternatives.
