Back pain: Most back pains are benign, related to the muscle dysfunction. You don't have to work out to have that. Uncomfortable beds, unusual posture during sleep, assuming a positing for some time that can put stress on the muscle may all be responsible. There may be some referred pain from the organs such as kidneys, so thorough history and physical exam is needed to get the root of your problem.

Lumbar muscle injury: Even if you don't work out, chances are your back pain is secondary to an injury of a muscle in your lower back. I would recommend rest and anti-inflammatory medications. If the symptoms persist see your doctor.
