Yes, but not excess: ... Calories. Even at rest you burn calories. Your body has to burn fuel just to keep normal functions going. You eat/drink nutrition and then you burn calories through metabolism. Of course, by working out you burn more calories. If you burn more calories than you take in, you lose weight. On the other hand, if you take in more calories than you burn, you gain weight.
