Normal metabolism: Your body requires calories for a number of non-exercise functions. Respiration [breathing], circulating blood, even cell growth and repair constantly require energy, thus burning calories. If you add daily functions such as walking, moving, reaching, there is a constant demand for energy by your body even with low levels of exercise.
